About Saint Joseph

Saint Joseph is a Roman Catholic church in Dorking, Surrey. It is part of the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton.

Introduction

In 1888, Father Volckeryck negotiated transferring ownership of the land for the Church from the Duke of Norfolk to the Diocesan Trustees.

History

The Reverend Jean-Francois Volckeryck, born in Belgium in 1828 and died in 1906, served as Parish Priest in Dorking from 1879 to 1903. The opening ceremony in June 1895 included the Duke of Norfolk, Lady Mary and Lady Margaret Howard in a full congregation. From 1962 to 1963, the building underwent an overhaul including oil heating, rewiring, and decorating. The construction is externally of Godalming stone with Bath stone dressings, and the roofs are covered with red tiles. Statues of Saint Peter and Paul were placed in 1908, and statues of Saint Joseph and the Holy Child were placed in 1912.

Parish life

An Outreach Group assists those facing isolation, anxiety, loneliness or needing extra support such as shopping, medicine delivery, lifts for medical appointments, or regular phone calls. Outreach incorporates the ministry for the Sick and Housebound.

Parishioners visit those unable to come to Mass, many taking them communion. A team of volunteers gives lifts for medical appointments.

The parish bereavement team helps families through the grieving process. The parish runs RCIA sessions held at various times throughout the year for those interested in becoming Catholic. The parish halls are available for hire on a regular or one-off basis.

Sacraments and pastoral care

A minimum of two months' notice is required before arranging a baptism. Couples are required to give 12 months' notice to the parish priest for marriage.

Families can request a visit from the Parish Priest to administer the Sacrament of the Sick for unwell relatives at home. The parish holds an Annual Parish Mass for the Sick and Elderly, with transport available. The parish offers pastoral care and practical guidance to those planning a funeral.

Visiting

St Joseph's holds an annual Ride and Stride fundraising event in September, with walks to local churches and half the money raised returned to St Joseph's. The parish newsletter is available online and in print at the back of the church.
