About Saint Mary, Our Lady of Victories

Saint Mary, Our Lady of Victories is a Roman Catholic church in Dundee, Dundee City. It is part of the Diocese of Dunkeld.

Introduction

The church was built by George Mathewson in 1850-1. Twin towers and a narthex were added in 1900 by Thomas M Cappon, with William G Lamond as draughtsman. Additions were made by Reginald Fairlie in 1926. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available on request before any Mass.

Architecture and furnishings

The church is a large Byzantine-Romanesque church with rubble-built nave and aisles, chancel and transepts. The east gable is dominated by twin art nouveau campanili from 1900, with coursed rubble, ashlar base and lanterns. A small hemispherical baptistry is at the base of the north tower. The halls to the south, a former school, date from circa 1860 and were extended by Ireland and McLaren in 1875 and Robert Keith in 1883, then remodelled by Peter Inglis in 1995. The interior has a high barrel vaulted nave and chancel with arched arcade on clustered piers with bell capital shafts.

Visiting

An elaborate wrought-iron gate stands in the arched doorway linking the towers. A Romanesque chevron-moulded gateway to the south was formerly the main school entrance. A rubble-built boundary wall with ashlar copes and a roll-moulded segmental arched gate is linked by an over-arch to the hall. Bells are housed in the north campanile.
