About Saint Mary, The Immaculate Conception
Saint Mary, The Immaculate Conception is a Roman Catholic church in Dundee, Dundee City. It is part of the Diocese of Dunkeld.
Introduction
Saint Mary, The Immaculate Conception in Dundee is a grade-A listed building designed by architect Joseph Aloysius Hansom and opened in 1866 as the city's third Roman Catholic church.
History
A chapel was soon available in the newly acquired property of Wellburn, but it became too small as the Catholic population increased. The church designed by the famous architect Joseph Hansom was finally opened on 13th May 1866. The 150th anniversary of Saint Mary's (Immaculate Conception) was celebrated on Friday 13th May 2016. By 1847 there were 200 Catholics in Lochee and district, who had to walk two miles to attend Sunday Mass in St Andrew's Church.
Parish life
A Prize Bingo event raised £641 for the Restoration Fund at Saint Mary's. The Restoration Fund at Saint Mary's is supported by a 100 Club with weekly winners.
Sacraments and pastoral care
A Parish Renewal Prayer Group meets every Thursday after Mass in St Mary's to pray for renewal of faith and missionary fervour. The parish runs a Repository and Spiritual Library, located in the room at the back of the church. The parish takes up a Special Collection for the Apostolate of Communications.
