About Saint Ninian

Saint Ninian is a Roman Catholic church in Menzieshill, Dundee City. It is part of the Diocese of Dunkeld.

Introduction

St Ninian's church opened its doors for the first time on 8 February 1969. The parish of St Ninian was established when Menzieshill was only 2 years old, and the church was built 6 years later.

Architecture and furnishings

The interior layout places every congregation member close to the altar of Blaxter stone, which stands on a raised sanctuary above the nave. Since it was built, the interior has been altered without detracting from the simplicity and beauty of the church.

Music and liturgy

Volunteers are involved in activities including children's liturgy, music, and the Faith group. Peter Whiston K.S.G. A.R.S.A., of Edinburgh, designed the church, which was built by Walker Bros., of Kirkcaldy, suitable for the reformed liturgy of Vatican II.

Parish life

The parish registered with Eco Congregation Scotland and gained a Silver Award in September 2021. In 2024, the parish achieved the Eco Congregation Gold award, presented by the bishop.

A weekly lunch is held in the refurbished church hall, which is named CC's. The parish has a Garden Gang that created a Mary Garden, a mini orchard, and a vegetable and flower growing area. The priests of St Ninian's parish served the NHS hospital for many years, visiting the sick, celebrating Sunday Mass in the hospital chapel, and providing Requiem Masses. St Ninian's Primary school was built on the grounds adjacent to the site planned for the church, and there has always been a very close relationship between the school and the parish.

Visiting

The church stands in Menzieshill, the highest and most westerly part of Dundee, with views over the town, the Tay estuary, the Sidlaw Hills, Perthshire, and Fife. Volunteers provide teas and coffees after Sunday Mass.
