About Saint Winefride, Shepshed

Saint Winefride, Shepshed is a Roman Catholic church in Shepshed, Leicestershire. It is part of the Diocese of Nottingham.

Introduction

The Roman Catholic parish of Shepshed was founded in the early nineteenth century by a priest of the Institute of Charity (Rosminians).

History

The original Pick Street church was built in less than a year by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, who refused to accept a fee for his work. The Rosminian priests served the Shepshed mission until 1852, after which the mission was kept alive until 1870 by the priests of Mount Saint Bernard. In 1870, Father John Aloysius Martens arrived in Shepshed and served the parish for the next 46 years. The foundation stone for the new church in Charnwood Road was laid on Saturday, 4th June 1927, with plans drawn by Messrs Young and Reid, architects of Grays Inn, London. The new Saint Winefride’s church was officially opened on Tuesday, 10th April 1928.

Architecture and furnishings

The new church has an overall length of 90ft, a width of 48ft, and a square tower rising to 50ft. The new church is built of grey sand faced bricks with Bath stone facings, a hammer beam roof of Colombian pine, and Delabole slates.

Parish life

The parish has a Flower Guild, church cleaning, brasses, sacred vessels, laundry, and money collectors and counters as church care ministries. The parish has a Guild of St Stephen altar servers group, open to women, men, girls and boys.
