About SS John Fisher and Thomas More, Borehamwood

SS John Fisher and Thomas More, Borehamwood is a Roman Catholic church in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire. It is part of the Archdiocese of Westminster.

Introduction

The Diocese authorised the building of the new church in 1956 at a cost of £45,511, with the Diocese contributing £15,000. Father George Barringer remained Parish Priest until his death in 1978, at the age of 71, and is buried at Allum Lane Cemetery.

Parish life

During construction, Mass was celebrated in the priest's house, using his furniture for the altar. A canteen for construction workers was used for Sunday Mass, with parish ladies preparing it.

Sacraments and pastoral care

During construction, Catechism classes were held in the priest's house. Before the church was built, all funerals, marriages and baptisms took place at St Teresa's, requiring a procession carrying altar furniture across the fields. Sacramental celebrations and funerals are normally not held at this church but at St Teresa's, known as the Mother Church.
