About Ss Peter & Paul
Ss Peter & Paul is a Roman Catholic church in Newport, Shropshire. It is part of the Diocese of Shrewsbury.
Introduction
The church was opened by Bishop Walsh on 3 July 1832. In 1835, Salters Hall and 2 acres was conveyed by John, Earl of Shrewsbury, to Bishop Thomas Walsh of Wolverhampton for a peppercorn sum. The resident priest at the time of the building was George Howe, who died in 1837 and is buried in front of the altar.
Architecture and furnishings
The church contains a large oil painting of the Crucifixion, restored in 2007, believed to be a copy of an original by Guido Reni. The font, at the front of the nave, was copied from an early English model and capped with a carved wooden figure holding a Lamb. The church has a war memorial crucifix, originally of wood and erected in 1900, made of modern materials, honouring parishioners who died in the World Wars. The shrine to Our Lady of Fatima and Saints Jacinta and Francisco was rededicated on 20 May 2017.
The church has a rose window added in 1920, visible from the front view. The Lady Chapel was added in 1913.
Music and liturgy
The church's organ is located on the balcony, with extra seating for the choir. The church has a stained glass window of St Nicholas, Bishop of Myra and patron saint of Newport, with scenes of three murdered children raised to life and a border of Christmas trees. The church has a stained glass window of St Winifred, virgin and martyr, with the miraculous spring at her feet and the Shrine at Holywell illustrated on the lower panel.
Visiting
There is normally ample parking in the car-park at the side of the church, entered from Waterside Mews. If the car-park is full, there is always quiet unrestricted parking in Waterside Mews.
The recorded list of Recusancy Fines imposed can be seen by visitors in the entry porch. Visitors will clearly see around the nave walls the framed gilt and painted Stations of the Cross. The church has a page for church hall hire.
