About St Aloysius
St Aloysius is a Roman Catholic church in Hebburn, Tyne and Wear. It is part of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle.
Introduction
The church was built in 1888 by C Walker of Newcastle. The church is built of polychrome brick with terracotta and sandstone dressings and a Welsh slate roof.
Architecture and furnishings
A report in the Jarrow Express of 8 June 1888 records the church's opening. The church has a 4-bay nave with north and south aisles, a south porch, and a 2-bay chancel. The church has double transepts and an apsidal chapel to the north transept. The interior has a boarded roof with scissor-braced trusses, continuous over nave and chancel.
Most of the church's glass is original, by Reed Millican of Newcastle. The altar and reredos are by John Gallagher of Newcastle. The west elevation has a round window of sandstone with plate tracery set in a round-headed brick recess with a gauged brick arch. Hood moulds, beast and flower stops, strings, and gable and buttress copings are made of terracotta.
The Lady Chapel is apsidal and has an arch-braced wood roof. The north transept contains a gallery with an organ case, and corbels show the position of a south gallery either removed or not built. A central arcaded beam supports the transept roofs. The interior has corbels of angels and mythical beasts.
