About St. Andrew and Blessed George Haydock

St. Andrew and Blessed George Haydock is a Roman Catholic church in Cottam, Lancashire. It is part of the Diocese of Lancaster.

Introduction

The chapel was re-built on its present site during the Preston Election Riots. In 1793 the present chapel was completed and consecrated on 25th October 1894.

History

In 1745, the chapel was burned down by an anti-catholic mob following the support for the Jacobean cause by the Catholics of the area. Restoration work was completed in early 2001.

Architecture and furnishings

To mark the centenary in 1893, the recess for the Lady Altar was built and the marble altar in the sanctuary was erected. It is most likely that Fr Gillow also installed the choir section – complete with the three windows above the entrance porch which were not in in place in 1888.

The church bell, now electrically operated, was donated by Mr W J Walmsley in 1961. In 2007 St Andrew’s hosted a flower festival over the weekend of the 30th June & 1st July.
