About St. Mary, Lea Town

St. Mary, Lea Town is a Roman Catholic church in Lea Town, Lancashire. It is part of the Diocese of Lancaster.

Introduction

Saint Mary, Lea Town, in the Diocese of Lancaster, is distinguished as the seventeenth oldest Catholic church in Lancashire, with its chapel completed in 1804. Father James Keville served as Parish Priest from 1968 until his death in November 2005, the longest tenure among the 24 Parish Priests.

Architecture and furnishings

In 2006, the church closed for approximately six months to allow urgent and vital building work. The small church bell, installed at St Mary's since about 1860, was previously in the Old Town Hall in Preston. The church is approached along a drive lined with twenty mature lime trees. The bell had not been rung for a long time because its stone support mounting was unstable. A mulberry tree, one of only two known in Preston, was discovered in the grounds.

Parish life

A former parish priest considered it a big part of his pastoral role to visit and take Holy Communion to the sick and housebound. A retired priest came to live at St Mary's and established himself as a popular member of the parish community, though there is no resident priest.
