About St. Anne's Church, Higher Openshaw

St. Anne's Church, Higher Openshaw is a Roman Catholic church in Higher Openshaw, Greater Manchester. It is part of the Diocese of Salford.

Introduction

The church is distinguished by a unique bell tower visible from the A635. Catholics in Higher Openshaw and Gorton established a Sunday school in a house adjoining the Bridge Inn, off Abbey Hey Lane.

History

The post-Reformation Catholic Church in the Fairfield area dates from 1846, when Father William Turner had charge of the Mission of Saint Augustine, Granby Row. In 1849, Father M.J Daly O.M.I. and Father P.J. Gray O.M.I became the first pastors. The Franciscans were given charge of Saint Anne's in 1861 and stayed for four years before transferring to Gorton Lane. The church built in the 1880s cost approximately £2500.

A new pastor came to Saint Anne's in 1904. In October 1907 Bishop Casartelli laid the foundation stone of a new school extension, opened the following April.

Parish life

The parish choirs sing at Masses to animate the liturgy. Eucharistic Ministers bring the Blessed Sacrament to the sick and housebound. Youth Ministry offers opportunities for prayer, learning, service, and community. Catechists help prepare candidates for the reception of the sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist.

Children normally start preparing for First Holy Communion when in Year 3 or older, through a parish-based programme with parents and carers. St Anne's Parish Hall is widely used for church activities and local community events, accommodating up to 100 people. First Confession is celebrated in Advent, during November or December, each year.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The Diocese of Salford expects parents and children to attend Mass on Sunday morning or Saturday evening for at least six weeks before arranging a child's Baptism. Baptism is normally celebrated on Sunday, either during Mass or shortly after the morning Mass.

Couples must give at least 6 months notice of their intention to marry at St Anne's. Young people celebrate Confirmation when they are in Year 8 or older. The First Holy Communion programme concludes with a parish celebration at Sunday Mass followed by a party in the hall.
