St. Brigid's Church, Beswick

Introduction

Saint Brigid's Church in Bradford, within the Diocese of Salford, was founded on Mill Street in 1879.

History

The parish grew out of St Anne's Ancoats, and Fr Liptrott acquired a site in 1877 to build a school-chapel. The church became independent in 1880 when Fr William Sassen, a Dutch priest, became parish priest and served for thirty-five years. The first church was opened in 1884. A second church was opened in 1901 and the church was re-consecrated.

In 1971 the parish hall was opened. In 1995 the last Mass was celebrated in the second church. In 1995 the building had to be demolished to make space for a new road. The new church was built a short distance away on Grey Mare Lane. The parish lists Choir among its ministries.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Couples wishing to marry at any of the parish churches must speak to the parish priest and allow at least six months for preparations. Couples married in a civil ceremony can seek a 'Convalidation' in church, requiring the full six months' preparation.

Visiting

Visitors will find a loop system for the hard of hearing, ramped access, and accessible toilet facilities in all the parish churches. Electronic copies of the parish newsletter are available on the Parish Website.
