About St Austin, St Helens

St Austin, St Helens is a Roman Catholic church in Saint Helens, Merseyside. It is part of the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

Introduction

St Austin's has been on Heath Street since 1906. The parish was established in 1906.

History

The parish is part of the Archdiocese of Liverpool, within the St Helens Family 3 Deanery. At St Austin's there is no screen or partition in the confessional; confession is face to face.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The parish walks families through baptism preparation beforehand so they know what to expect. Confirmation preparation is arranged by speaking to the parish priest. The parish helps arrange Catholic funerals with no red tape or delay.

Visiting

The Mass sheet includes song lyrics, Bible readings, and responses. Baptisms, first communions, and school Masses often take place at the church. At the Easter Vigil, those ready are received into the Church. A car park is available at the church, with additional parking on the surrounding streets.

At the back of the pews on the right-hand side, two baskets hold sheets of paper: a Mass sheet and a weekly newsletter. Visitors may come early and sit quietly with gentle music playing, and no one will disturb them. The doors open half an hour before every Mass for quiet sitting, and at other times visitors can ring to arrange access. After Mass, the clergy greet people at the door and shake hands.
