About St Mary (Lowe House), St Helens

St Mary (Lowe House), St Helens is a Roman Catholic church in Saint Helens, Merseyside. It is part of the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

History

In 1793 Mrs. Eccleston donated land for a chapel, and the church built was later replaced by the current building. The current church was the brainchild of Father Reginald Riley SJ, parish priest from 1912 to 1946. Mr Yearsley, with the help of unemployed miners, laid the foundations of the church before it was taken over by the builders. Three builders of the parish, C J Middlehurst, J Yearsley and A Forbes, formed a company for the construction of the church.

Architecture and furnishings

The current church design is described as 'free Romanesque', fusing Romanesque with Gothic features such as rib vaulting, flying buttresses and an octagonal crossing tower with castellations. The dome is a Renaissance embellishment and is somewhat controversial. The copper cross surmounting the dome is 16 feet high and was given by the wife and daughter of Mr James Yearsley. The carillon at St Mary's, Lowe House is one of the largest in the British Isles with 47 bells, the largest weighing 4 tons 4cwt. The carillon is known as the 'Thanksgiving' Carillon because it was erected in the centenary year of Catholic Emancipation. St Mary's Lowe House has been called 'The Basilica of St Helens' and 'The Poor Man's Cathedral'.

Music and liturgy

The carillon is played by hand using a clavier or keyboard not unlike that of an organ. Music is an integral and important part of the celebration of Christ's word at St Mary's.
