About St. Bernadette
St. Bernadette is a Roman Catholic church in Lancaster, Lancashire. It is part of the Diocese of Lancaster.
Introduction
The church was designed in a modern style based on early Roman basilica models, stressing visibility and the centrality of the high altar. The parish held an Annual November Fayre with sewing, knitting and baking.
Architecture and furnishings
The tower and crucifix were demolished after becoming structurally dangerous. In 2001 the original copper roof was replaced with a new copper roof at a cost of £60,000.
A free-standing tower surmounted by a crucifix was intended to make the church a major landmark. Extensive internal modifications coordinated the altar area with modern liturgical requirements and created a chapel and additional social space. The parish maintains a Music Ministry. The parish operates a Children's Liturgy.
Sacraments and pastoral care
In 1947 about four acres of land in Bowerham were acquired, including the old Scotforth Corn Mill, which was converted into a Chapel of ease in 1948, with Holy Mass celebrated by priests from the Cathedral. In November 2001, the parish priest was asked to take pastoral responsibility for the parish of St Thomas & Elizabeth’s in Thurnham, linking the two parishes.
