About St Patrick, Collyhurst

St Patrick, Collyhurst is a Roman Catholic church in Collyhurst, Greater Manchester. It is part of the Diocese of Salford.

Introduction

The church is built of red brick with white stone dressings and a slate roof, in Romanesque style.

Architecture and furnishings

The church has a nave with north and south aisles, a west tower, and an apsidal sanctuary. The interior features aisle arcades of yellow marble with carved concave capitals and round-headed arches with panelled soffits. The apse is decorated with gilt and coloured mosaics. The church's stepped symmetrical facade comprises a square central tower with narrow set-back and slightly lower side pieces, plus square 2-storey porches at the aisle ends, all with stone parapets and flat roofs.

The tower features a giant blank arch containing a shallow portal with a round-headed doorway, a mosaic tympanum, and three round-headed lancet windows set in a white stone surround. The side pieces have tall lancets, while the porches have doorways similar to the central one but generally simpler, with small round-headed windows above. The nave and aisles are lit by round-headed lancets, and the apse is blind. The church has a tour available in sign language and voice over.
