About St. Columba

St. Columba is a Roman Catholic church in Banchory, Aberdeenshire. It is part of the Diocese of Aberdeen.

Introduction

Mr Devlin, A.R.I.B.A., planned the church, which is built of Hill of Fare pink granite.

History

Legacies from John Gruer and Caithness Brodie, with other donations, allowed building to begin in 1930. A loan was required to buy the cottage that was to serve as the presbytery.

Architecture and furnishings

High in the west wall, a circular stained-glass window is divided into three segments for the Holy Trinity, showing Saint Columba as a dove, Saint Andrew with his saltire and Saint Margaret with the crowned white Scottish rose. Adults who wish to be baptised or received into full communion can take part in an organised RCIA program.

Sacraments and pastoral care

A child’s baptism is arranged by meeting the parish priest in person, with at least one month’s notice. At least six months’ notice is requested before a marriage so that preparation can take place.

In an emergency, the Sacrament of the Sick can be arranged immediately. Confession can be arranged through the parish office.
