About St. Columba

St. Columba is a Roman Catholic church in Woodside, Glasgow City. It is part of the Archdiocese of Glasgow.

Introduction

The parish was established in 1906 by Archbishop John Maguire to relieve pressure on St Joseph's church.

History

The church opened in 1941, the year of the Clydebank and Govan blitz during the Second World War. The cost of the church was met by local families, each paying 6d per brick. The church was designed by award-winning architect Jack Coia of Gillespie, Kidd & Coia.

Architecture and furnishings

The church has a sculpture of the Paschal Lamb over the central door. The church has painted panels of the Stations of the Cross by Hugh Adam Crawford, from the Catholic Pavilion at the Glasgow Empire Exhibition 1938. In the sanctuary there is a marble reredos with a carved crucifix by Benno Schotz.

Parish life

The parish live-streams Masses via the internet to its YouTube channel. The parish prepares children from St Joseph's Primary School for First Holy Communion, normally in May, with meetings and classes for kids, parents and God-parents.

The parish prepares catechumens for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, who receive the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil. The church is situated behind Arnold Clark car sales and is reached by driving directions from the M8.
