About St. Patrick (Anderston)

St. Patrick (Anderston) is a Roman Catholic church in Anderston, Glasgow City. It is part of the Archdiocese of Glasgow.

Introduction

Saint Patrick's Church in Anderston, within the Archdiocese of Glasgow, is a Category B listed building, listed on 15/12/1970. Designed by P P Pugin in 1898 as a Decorated Gothic church, it is distinguished by its architectural style and historic recognition.

Architecture and furnishings

The church is built of squared red sandstone, rock-faced rubble with polished ashlar dressings. The east front features a tall gabled front with a projecting semi-octagonal baptistry to the south. The interior retains all original fittings, including seating, a marble altar rail with brass gates, and an elaborate canopied marble reredos. The stained glass in the east window was made by John Hardman studios in 1951.

The church has a 7-bay nave with small buttresses to the north and cusped 5-light clerestorey windows with lean-to confessionals to the south. The interior has an organ gallery at the east, three wide arches to the nave arcade with arch moulding dying into circular piers, and engaged shafts rising from the springing of the arches to support a timber trussed roof. The east front has two pointed arched entrances with simple nook shafts and dedication crosses flanking the gable. The east front has a tall 7-light window, elaborately cusped with mouchette tracery, a louvred gablehead opening and an apex finial.

The side chapels have elaborately carved altarpieces. The baptistry is simple.
