About St. Cuthbert, Pemberton
St. Cuthbert, Pemberton is a Roman Catholic church in Pemberton, Greater Manchester. It is part of the Archdiocese of Liverpool.
Introduction
St Edward’s parish was formed from the original parishes of St Edward, St Cuthbert and Sacred Heart in Wigan.
Music and liturgy
Singing is integral to worship at this parish, and everyone is encouraged to sing. The parish uses the Celebration hymnbook for music at funerals. Recorded music is not permitted during a funeral mass or service.
Parish life
Children’s Liturgy is offered after Sunday Mass at both churches in the parish. The parish is developing working relationships with other faith groups.
St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School is a member of the parish of St Edward’s. The evening before a funeral, the body of a deceased active member may be received into the church for vigil prayers and the Rosary.
Sacraments and pastoral care
As part of baptism preparation, parents who are not attending Mass must begin coming to Mass. A parents and carers meeting is held before the First Holy Communion sessions start.
Those in Year 8 at school are invited to register for Confirmation each year. The parish runs programs to help people explore their faith and understand the role of the Church in an informal setting.
Confessions are heard before or after Masses or by arrangement with the priest. Those going into hospital for surgery are invited to come for confession and anointing beforehand. In danger of death, contact the priest directly so the person can receive Holy Communion and be anointed.
Clergy and authorised lay ministers take Holy Communion to the sick and housebound, those in care homes and those in hospital. Funeral Masses are always celebrated by the parish priest. A Funeral Mass is only possible from Mondays to Thursdays. A simpler funeral service of prayers and readings lasting about 30 minutes can be held in church.
A short eulogy of about five minutes can be delivered by a family member or friend at any of the funeral choices. Someone can read the first bible reading during the service or Mass. Live streaming or videoing of funerals is possible with permission of the priest and musicians. The funeral team includes the priest, two deacons, and two authorised extraordinary lay ministers who can take services if clergy are unavailable. The parish meets for tea and coffee after Mass on alternate Sundays in Sacred Heart Church and the last Sunday each month in St Cuthbert's Church.
