About St. Gabriel's Church

St. Gabriel's Church is a Roman Catholic church in Billingshurst, West Sussex. It is part of the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton.

Introduction

St Gabriel’s Church in Billingshurst was built in 1961/2. The church was consecrated in 1982 when all financial liabilities regarding its building were finally settled.

History

Between 1925 and 1962, the Catholic community worshipped in the former ‘Gospel Hall’ in Lower Station Road, now demolished. In 1933, Billingshurst was granted a resident priest – Father Walter Stone, who boosted the congregation. The church was built on land gifted by Mr and Mrs Maille of Marringdean Road in memory of their daughter, with a commemorative plaque in the porch. The church in Billingshurst (Saint Gabriel’s) was then joined with the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation (West Grinstead).

Architecture and furnishings

When first built, the altar was against the back wall so the priest celebrated Mass with his back to the congregation. The altar rails were later removed and the altar table placed in its present central position so the priest could face the congregation. There were altar rails all along the front of the altar steps. Two angels were carved into the glass either side of the entrance doors to the church.

Parish life

The Christian Friendship Group began in February 2015 as an independent, parish-based group. The servers at St Gabriel’s belong to the Guild of St Stephen, which was instituted at the start of the twentieth century. The servers were all enrolled on the feast of Pentecost.

St Gabriel's is a member of Churches Together in Billingshurst. The four churches in Billingshurst support ecumenical activities to promote inclusion in the life of the Church.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The Bishop of Arundel & Brighton requires a minimum of one year's notice of intention to marry, whether at St Gabriel's or elsewhere. Those seeking baptism for themselves or their child are directed to contact the parish office. Those feeling called to the priesthood, permanent diaconate or religious/consecrated life are directed to contact the parish office or the Vocations Director.
