About Jesus Christ the Redeemer of Mankind

Jesus Christ the Redeemer of Mankind is a Roman Catholic church in Cranleigh, Surrey. It is part of the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton.

Parish life

The church stands on the Ewhurst Road, adjacent to St Cuthbert Mayne School. Saturday's Vigil Mass is a reflective, quiet celebration.

The parish project supports two Missions run by the Holy Ghost Fathers in East Pokot, a remote and impoverished region of Kenya. Since the new Parish was formed in 2006, the Pound a Week Group has sent the Missions in East Pokot more than £93,000.

Each Autumn the parish commences a series of evening sessions for people who want to know more about the Catholic faith, initially without committing themselves. Young people are usually confirmed as part of a Deanery celebration together with other parishes from the Guildford Deanery. In this parish Baptisms are not celebrated at all during the season of Lent.

Regular events

Once a month during Mass, the priest addresses children preparing for First Holy Communion in his homily. Families are welcome to join the community for tea and coffee after Mass.

The church regularly celebrates school Masses and enjoys joint activities with the school. Parents are asked to join once a month for parents' evenings. Baptism preparation courses generally take place several times a year.

Sacraments and pastoral care

At least twelve months' notice of the intention to marry must be given to the Parish Priest. The confirmation programme is for young people in year 10 at school who desire to take on a personal faith.

Families will often arrange for a parish Memorial Mass to be celebrated for the person who has died, particularly if the funeral itself was family-only or not a Requiem Mass. The Care Group offers a friendly visit, a telephone call or, perhaps, the odd bit of shopping.
