About St. John the Apostle, Luton
St. John the Apostle, Luton is a Roman Catholic church in Luton, Bedfordshire. It is part of the Diocese of Northampton.
Introduction
A former granary on Sundon Park Road was bought in 1965 with help from Councillor Mr James Cussens, and Leicester architect T.E.Wilson was asked to adapt it into a church with a parish hall and living quarters for the priest. The new church opened in 1966 with a dedication to Saint John the Evangelist, and a bishop solemnly blessed it on 1 November. By 1971 the parish in Luton was known as Saint John the Apostle. The church was consecrated in 1991 while it celebrated its Silver Jubilee.
History
The SMA Fathers served the church from 1974 until 1978. In 2001 Saint John the Apostle was clustered with Holy Family, and the following year the two parishes merged, with the parish priest serving both churches. Sunday Mass at Saint Matthew's eventually came under the priest at Saint John the Apostle until Saint Matthew's closed in 2003, and the Saint Matthew's community was welcomed into the Holy Family and Saint John the Apostle parish.
Parish life
Catholics admitted to hospital can be offered Holy Communion once the admissions team is told they are Catholic. The parish offers courses for people interested in finding out more about the faith.
Sacraments and pastoral care
The parish runs sacramental programmes for its young people. The parish repository stocks gifts, cards, Missals, rosary beads, prayer cards, and First Holy Communion cards and gifts.
