About St John the Evangelist

St John the Evangelist is a Roman Catholic church in Heron's Ghyll, East Sussex. It is part of the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton.

Introduction

Catholicism was re-established in Heron's Ghyll on 8 April 1866 when Mass was said in the house of poet Coventry Patmore and his second wife Marianne née Byles by retired priest Father Bernard Fallon. A sculpture of Saint John the Evangelist by Marcus Cornish was blessed by the Bishop of Arundel & Brighton in January 2009.

Architecture and furnishings

The church, designed by architect F A Walters in stone in C13 Gothic style, is a chancel and nave with a tower on the north side, built in 1896-1897 and consecrated in 1904. During Sunday Mass, children of school age may participate in their own liturgy.

Parish life

The parish forms part of a cluster community of three churches: Saint Mary Mother of Christ in Crowborough, St John Evangelist in Heron's Ghyll and Our Lady Immaculate & St Philip Neri in Uckfield. Many lay people are fully involved in parish life, and a parish priest living in Crowborough is aided by deacons. The parish is conjoined with Uckfield and continues to thrive. A group of young members is trained as Altar Servers, with enrolment into the Guild of St Stephen. The parish is committed to the safeguarding policies of the Diocese and the Catholic Church in England and Wales. The parish has a safeguarding coordinator in Herons Ghyll.
