St. John the Evangelist, Kirkdale

Introduction

Saint John the Evangelist, Kirkdale, was built in 1885 and designed by J. and B. Sinnott.

Architecture and furnishings

The church is built of rock faced stone with ashlar bands and dressings, and has a slate roof. The church has a single vessel nave and chancel, aisles under lean-to roofs, transepts and chapels. The nave has a 5-light west window with Geometrical tracery over a canted baptistry with canted projecting centre. The church has 3-light aisle windows and 2-light clerestory windows, with flat buttresses between pairs of windows.

The south west porch has a pointed entrance and stepped gable. The church has a low south transept with 5-light window and a taller north transept with organ loft. The east end has a 7-light east window, flanking chapels under lean-to roofs with rose windows. The interior has a 4-bay nave arcade on round columns, a waggon roof and a west gallery. The interior has a 2-bay chancel arcade with clustered columns and a wrought-iron reredos.
