About St. Joseph
St. Joseph is a Roman Catholic church in Barnoldswick, Lancashire. It is part of the Diocese of Leeds.
Introduction
St Joseph's marked its 50th anniversary with a refurbishment, including bringing the marble altar forward to the centre and re-siting the original altar rails.
Architecture and furnishings
The clock and turret bell were installed in 1932, with the clock and dials hand-made by local craftsman Mr John Pickles. The Stations of the Cross, painted in copper, are copies of those in Antwerp Cathedral. The original wooden altar was moved to the adjacent Sacred Heart chapel on the right. A similar sized altar on the left was dedicated to Our Lady.
The anniversary changes also saw two new marble lecterns erected and the re-siting of the Baptismal font, with pupils from St Joseph's School contributing towards the cost of the latter. A reception area was created by erecting a Narthex screen in American red oak. The Narthex screen, installed earlier, was dismantled and put into storage.
Music and liturgy
A new mezzanine floor above the entrance houses the organ and a dedicated choir space, reached by an ornate spiral staircase. The Bishop of Leeds dedicated the church and altar during a concelebrated Pontifical Mass.
Parish life
The parish serves several villages west of Barnoldswick, including Gisburn, Paythorne, and Rimmington. A weekly newsletter detailing parish news and services is distributed at the parish churches each weekend. A new entrance at the back of the church improved access for the less able.
Sacraments and pastoral care
Baptism is by appointment after a two-session baptismal course with a DVD. In the 2017–2018 school year, children in Year 3 prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation only, and First Holy Communion preparation moved to Year 4.
Confirmation takes place when children are in Year 6, and children not at St Joseph's Catholic Primary School may contact the parish to complete the Sacramental Programme. The parish has a Saint Vincent de Paul Society. The Saint Vincent de Paul Society welcomes new members.
Notable people and events
Fr Theodore Van Woerkem, a Dutch priest, was appointed first resident parish priest of St Joseph's Church in 1907. In 1904, Fr Thomas Byles, who died on the Titanic, was appointed curate in charge at Barnoldswick.
