About St. Joseph
St. Joseph is a Roman Catholic church in Stepps, North Lanarkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Motherwell.
Introduction
Rev. M. O'Keefe built a Gothic church for around 550 people in Cardowan. The formal opening of the church took place on Sunday 14th November 1875.
History
On 16th May 1871 the people of Garnkirk, Cardowan and surrounding areas petitioned the Archbishop for a Catholic Church to be built in the area. The church was opened as a separate mission on 14th November 1875, under Rev. Francis J. Hughes.
A financial statement for the Parish dated 1st January 1876 noted a loan from the diocese for £1,870. Rev. John Black was appointed in 1893 and held the charge till his death on 18th October 1904. Father Black built a new school in 1902. In 1905 a baptismal font was placed in the church by the congregation in memory of Father Black.
Architecture and furnishings
In 1927, William McGhee & Sons of Paisley were given the contract for structural changes including raising the choir, adding two confessionals, building a stone sacristy, and installing central heating and electricity. The Church has improved car parking facilities, the roof, heating, lights, and decoration.
Parish life
The parish serves the G33 area of Glasgow, mainly Stepps, Cardowan and Millerston. The parish of St Dominic's Craigend separated from St Joseph's on 1 September 2023.
The Justice and Peace group meets every six weeks to arrange events and campaigns. The group offers tea, coffee and homemade scones after Mass on Thursdays.
Saint Joseph's Hall is available for private bookings. The Remembrance Book is updated on a monthly basis.
