About St. Joseph

St. Joseph is a Roman Catholic church in Stokesley, North Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Middlesbrough.

Introduction

Saint Joseph in Stokesley, within the Diocese of Middlesbrough, was officially opened and consecrated on 13 May 1873 by Bishop Cornthwaite. The church was built in 1872-3 to the designs of architect George Goldie.

History

In 1944 Italian prisoners-of-war and Father MacDonnell replaced the timber flooring with concrete and re-plastered the walls. On 30 October 1975 a fire caused by an electrical fault destroyed the church interior; it was re-opened in 1976. In 1972/3 the church was modernised and redecorated for its centenary.
