About St Joseph's Catholic Church

St Joseph's Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic church in Wetherby, West Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Leeds.

Introduction

The church received the Leeds Award for Architecture in 1987. Fenwick Lawson's artwork in the church is symbolically arranged around a sculpture of Christ ascending from the cross.

Parish life

The parish maintains a group that provides choral singing for Christmas, Easter and other occasions. The parish has two churches: St Joseph's in Westgate, Wetherby and the church of the Immaculate Conception in Sicklinghall. The Catholic community includes the primary school St Josephs, Carmelite sisters at Wood Hall, and two prison chaplaincies at Wetherby Young Offenders and HM Wealstun at Thorp Arch village. Sacramental preparation follows the Diocesan programme for the initiation of children into full communion with the Catholic Church, starting in Year 3 with First Reconciliation, First Communion in Year 4 and Confirmation in Year 6.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Baptismal preparation is offered by the parish priest, with opportunities for parents to meet others over coffee after Sunday Mass. Marriage preparation is conducted at a mutually convenient time for the couple and the parish priest. The parish priest provides support and advice about funeral services and practicalities, as well as pastoral support to the family. Catechists are available in the parish hall after Sunday Mass to discuss any aspect of a child's preparation.
