About St Joseph's, Reading

St Joseph's, Reading is a Roman Catholic church in Reading, Berkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Portsmouth.

Introduction

St Joseph's in Reading, within the Diocese of Portsmouth, celebrated its first Mass in the current church on Christmas Day 1976.

History

In 1935 Mr and Mrs John Eppstein allowed Mass to be said at Quarry House in Kentwood Hill one Sunday a month for congregations of more than 60. In 1941 the congregation began renting the Village Hall in Victoria Road for Sunday Mass, served by priests from English Martyrs.

Parish life

The parish runs a programme for children in year 3 and above, with sessions in the church hall on Saturdays in term time and First Holy Communion usually celebrated in May. The St Vincent de Paul Society is an international Christian voluntary organization dedicated to tackling poverty and disadvantage by providing direct practical assistance to anyone in need.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Special Ministers of the Eucharist serve at all Masses and bring communion to those in the community who are sick, housebound or in hospital. Couples planning to marry are asked to contact the priest at least six months in advance and to take part in a marriage preparation course. Parents seeking baptism for their child are required to attend a baptism course beforehand. The parish has strong links with LIFE, the national pro-life charity, and a LIFE house in Bracknell accommodating seven mothers and their babies looks to the Reading branch for support. The parish supports overseas missionaries through the APF 'Red Boxes' in many homes in the area.

Visiting

The church is decorated with fresh flowers, usually changed on Saturdays, except during Advent and Lent. The two parish halls are used for church and outside activities and can be booked or hired. Volunteers maintain the gardens and grounds outside and behind the church, with work including grass cutting, leaf sweeping, pruning and looking after flower beds.
