About St Jude
St Jude is a Roman Catholic church in Maypole, West Midlands. It is part of the Archdiocese of Birmingham.
Introduction
In 1981, the congregation moved into the present church, approached by an avenue of chestnut trees which led to Kingswood Farm.
Music and liturgy
The parish provides access to Universalis, which includes readings of the Mass and Divine Office. During lockdown, the publishers of Magnificat provided a free online version of their publication for the parish. The parish provides prayers at home for those unable to attend Mass and for when a funeral cannot be attended. The parish provides prayers and reflections for vocations, available on the diocesan website.
Parish life
The parish Justice and Peace group supports CAFOD by helping with the twice-yearly Family Fast Day collections. The Lent Study Groups meet online or on church premises for five sessions, often following the York Courses, with average attendance of 50 each year.
Penitential Services are held in the parish twice each year, one in Advent and one in Lent. Each year there is a special 'Service for the Sick' at St Dunstan's. Every month a special Mass is said during which couples married in that month are invited to renew their marriage vows.
Sacraments and pastoral care
Children at Catholic schools are prepared for Confirmation in their final year at primary school, while those at non-Catholic schools are helped by the Parish Catechist. The parish arranges for the Blessed Eucharist to be brought to those too sick to attend Mass, by contacting the presbytery or Parish Priest. Weddings are by arrangement with the Parish Priest, and there are pre-marriage courses for couples who want to marry.
Parents wishing to have children who attend non-Catholic schools prepared for Reconciliation, Holy Communion and Confirmation should make themselves known at Sunday Masses to the Parish Clergy, and it is expected that the children regularly attend. Couples are asked to contact the Parish at least a year ahead of the proposed wedding day to reserve the date and allow time for preparation. The Walk of Witness on Good Friday starts with a meditation service at New Life Baptist Church, then processes silently behind a twelve-foot cross up the High Street to All Saints.
