About Our Lady of Lourdes
Our Lady of Lourdes is a Roman Catholic church in Birmingham, West Midlands. It is part of the Archdiocese of Birmingham.
Introduction
From 1911, the area of Yardley Wood was served with Mass by the Capuchins from Olton.
History
In 1925, a scout hut in Brigfield Road was acquired where the first Mass was celebrated by Father O’Hagan of English Martyrs, Sparkhill. In the 1950s and 1960s, as the parish increased in numbers, money was raised for the building of a new church. The neighbouring parishes of St Jude, Maypole and St Ambrose Barlow, Hall Green both grew from chapels served from Our Lady of Lourdes, becoming distinct parishes in 1967 and 1979 respectively.
Parish life
Children at Our Lady of Lourdes School make their First Holy Communion in Year 3, at ages 7 to 8. Children at Our Lady of Lourdes School are confirmed in Year 6, at ages 10 to 11. Couples planning to marry are required to attend a marriage preparation course led by Marriage Care. Holy Communion can be brought to the sick and housebound by the parish clergy, the Sisters, or Ministers of the Eucharist.
