About St. Marie's Church, Bury
St. Marie's Church, Bury is a Roman Catholic church in Bury, Greater Manchester. It is part of the Diocese of Salford.
History
The Catholic church of 1841 was designed by J Harper of York. Restoration of the tower and lantern began in June 2019 following a £214,500 National Lottery Heritage Fund award. The tower was dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt, and the sloping pediment was repointed and clad in lead. Stained glass at the east end is possibly original. Inside, rotted lengths of the main roof purlins were replaced, and major cracks in the west wall masonry were repaired and the wall made more rigid.
Architecture and furnishings
The church is in perpendicular style, built of ashlar, aisle-less and rectangular. The west gable front has a battlemented porch and a 5-light deeply-recessed window flanked by buttresses. The gable is surmounted by an octagonal lantern tower with traceried openings and enriched battlemented parapet, after the manner of St Helen's, York. The church has 2-light windows to the sides.
Music and liturgy
Seven altar servers, two from St Marie's and five from St Joseph's, were formally enrolled into the Guild of St Stephen. St Marie's altar servers were awarded bronze medals in recognition for their dedicated and committed service to their ministry.
Parish life
The parish comprises two churches, St Marie's and St Joseph's, with the parish priest residing at St Marie's presbytery. Baptism preparation sessions are offered at the presbytery with parish catechists. Engaged couples are required to attend a pre-nuptial weekend course in the six months prior to marriage. In this parish, a public act of consecration was made before a statue of Our Lady of Fatima.
