About St. Mary, East Finchley

St. Mary, East Finchley is a Roman Catholic church in London, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Westminster.

Introduction

The parish of St Mary's, East Finchley, was formally organised in 1898, when a building on the corner of the High Road and Chapel Street was re-opened as a church.

History

On 15th November 1940 the building was badly damaged in an air raid. For a short while Mass was celebrated in Our Lady of Lourdes School, until a large wooden hut was moved on to the present site of the church. The present site was at that point a villa called Bewley, which served as the presbytery. Although government funds would have been available under the War Damages programme, they would not have covered the full cost, and the building of a church here represented tremendous courage and generosity by the people who made it.

Music and liturgy

The parish welcomes instrumentalists and singers to contribute at Mass, with both traditional and modern Christian music in use. A parish choir rehearses and performs carols at Christmas and paschal hymns at Easter.

Parish life

The Finchley Foodbank, founded in 2013, is an ecumenical project of St Mary's and other local churches and organisations. The J&P group promotes justice, peace and care of the environment in parish life and maintains strong links with projects in Ethiopia. The parish prepares children for baptism, first communion and confirmation and adults for baptism, reception into the Church and confirmation through sacramental preparation courses. A book at the back of the church lets parishioners share prayer requests.
