About St Mary
St Mary is a Roman Catholic church in Hexham. It is part of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle.
Introduction
The foundation stone was laid on 22nd April 1828. Bishop Penswick, the Vicar Apostolic, opened the church on 22nd September 1830 by singing the Pontifical High Mass.
History
Father Singleton served as parish priest from 1827 until 1863. In 1979, the church was completely renovated and the sanctuary re-ordered, re-using materials from the former altar. In 2007, a narthex was added beside the main door, and the chapel area was extended to over twice its size to form Saint Mary's Centre. In 2015, major work renewed the heating and lighting systems, and the church was redecorated in a scheme closer to the original design.
Architecture and furnishings
The church's west gable end faces the road, with ashlar, three windows separated by applied octagonal shafts, and a shallow crenellated gable topped with Vatican arms. A lower projecting porch has a crenellated gable, angle buttresses, and a central pointed doorway with a crocketted ogee label. The nave is three bays of rubble with dividing buttresses, and the east gable is crenellated with a two-stage octagonal belfry above a polygonal shallow chancel. The interior retains contemporary furnishings, including an encrusted frieze with medallions containing Catholic symbols, a segmental wooden ceiling with ribs, and a west-end gallery on three Tudor arches. The church is built in the Gothick style, a design attributed unconvincingly to John Green.
Parish life
St Mary's is part of the Heavenfield Partnership, a united group of Roman Catholic churches in Bellingham, Haltwhistle, Haydon Bridge, Hexham, Minsteracres, Otterburn, Prudhoe and Swinburne. The parish's Justice and Peace Group collects on behalf of the West Northumberland Food Bank and the Diocesan Refugee Project. The parish's Saint Vincent de Paul Group regularly visits Roman Catholics and non-Catholics recovering from hospital and people in residential care, and provides practical and spiritual support to parishioners in difficult times.
Sacraments and pastoral care
The parish runs a course of instruction and prayer for those who wish to know more about Jesus Christ and the Church He founded. The course is mainly for those who desire to become Catholic, whether or not they are already baptised, and adult Catholics not yet confirmed are also welcome.
