Introduction
Saint Mary & Saint John Southworth in Samlesbury, in the Diocese of Salford, is a chapel with presbytery under one roof dated 1818.
Architecture and furnishings
The chapel interior is a simple shell with flat ceiling and an east gallery on 2 iron columns. A rear wall behind the altar has a large framing recess with wide depressed arch flanked by Ionic columns bearing a dentilled cornice and frieze lettered 'ECCE PANIS ANGELORUM'. The altar is surrounded by a curved communion rail with stick balusters. The building has a hipped roof with a chimney on the hip, another on the ridge behind, and a belfry on the apex. The church is a Grade II listed building, first listed on 27-Feb-1984. The chapel is of rectangular plan with entrance at the east end in a round-headed doorway with stone jambs. The chapel has four windows on each side and two in the east gable, all stilted lunettes with radiating glazing bars.
