About St. Mary

St. Mary is a Roman Catholic church in Thetford, Norfolk. It is part of the Diocese of East Anglia.

Introduction

The church is the oldest Catholic church in continuous use in the Diocese of East Anglia.

History

Bishop Thomas Walsh, Vicar Apostolic of the Midland District, solemnly blessed the church on 6 July 1827. Thetford resident George Gardiner funded the church.

The balcony at the back of the church was added in 1962. The parish priest walked to Walsingham to Our Lady’s Shrine, bringing prayer petitions from parishioners, and raising money for Jubilee projects.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The parish runs evening classes for anyone interested in becoming a Catholic and for existing Catholics wanting to know more about their faith. A programme of ecclesiastical, historical and social events continues throughout the bicentenary year, giving parishioners and the wider community an opportunity to celebrate the church's past.
