About St. Thomas of Canterbury

St. Thomas of Canterbury is a Roman Catholic church in Brandon, Norfolk. It is part of the Diocese of East Anglia.

Introduction

The church is a small brick-built church located just outside Brandon on Brandon Road heading towards Weeting.

Architecture and furnishings

New icons around the church were purchased with remaining funds from an anonymous benefactor of the Divine Mercy Pictures. Lina Busuttile, a member of the Mildenhall community, created the new altar cloth for St Thomas'.

Music and liturgy

For many years the parish had a book club operating at Mildenhall until Covid saw its demise. Stephen Dean remarked on two young women in psalm 30:6 “at night there are tears but Joy comes with Dawn” (The Grail psalms 1963).

Parish life

The parish is a certified Fair Trade parish and offers Fair Trade goods for sale monthly at St Thomas'. The parish undertakes pilgrimages to holy places, courses of prayer or study in Lent and Advent, and parish retreats. Many parish members have attended Cursillo courses, a movement of spiritual renewal.

Regular events

The parish offers periodic social events including picnics, dinners, raffles, and an Autumn Fayre. Every year the parish conducts classes for those preparing for the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Confirmation preparation normally takes place in school year 10 or above. Couples are asked to allow at least six months to arrange a marriage within the Church. Holy Communion is brought to the sick, housebound or infirm who cannot come to church. Fourteen young people were accompanied over 24 weeks in preparation for Confirmation.

Visiting

Both churches hold a lending library of books on the Church, prayer, spirituality and biographies of saints, free to borrow. Copies of books about St Thomas Becket are available for sale at the back of the church in Brandon, with payment via the CTS pamphlet box. Lost property is kept in the narthex for one month before disposal.
