About St Mary's Cadogan Street

St Mary's Cadogan Street is a Roman Catholic church in Chelsea, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Westminster.

Introduction

St Mary's Cadogan Street in Chelsea is a Roman Catholic church designed by John Francis Bentley (1839-1902), an English church architect and decorative designer mainly for Roman Catholic clients.

History

The foundation stone of the present church was laid in 1877, and the church was opened and blessed by Cardinal Manning in May 1879. The parish has installed underfloor heating in the church, which is surmounted by a new floor made of Purbeck stone, and commissioned a new lighting system. The church, built circa 1877-79, is in yellow brick with stone dressings and a tiled roof, in Early English/Georgian Gothic style.

Architecture and furnishings

The church contains the high altar and pulpit designed by Bentley, which belonged to the original Chapel. The Blessed Sacrament Chapel was designed by Edward Pugin. The church has a hanging rood with a figure of Christ, robed and crowned, and the symbols of the four Evangelists. The church has cusped lancet windows to the clerestory and a pointed barrel roof with ties, with stone columns and dressings.

Parish life

St Mary's SVP members walk the streets monthly to provide food, water, sleeping bags and 'Vinnie packs' to the homeless. The parish has a primary school, St Joseph's, a one-form entry school offering outstanding education. The parish runs a parent-child programme for First Holy Communion, with parents attending sessions alongside their children. The parish's tradition of appeals for the relief of the poor is continued by its St Vincent de Paul's Society. The church is described as an oasis of prayer and quiet for everyone, not just Catholic people.
