St. Mary's Church, Chipping

Introduction

Saint Mary's Church in Chipping, within the Diocese of Salford, is a Grade II listed building, first listed on 22-Nov-1983.

Architecture and furnishings

The Roman Catholic church was built in 1827. The church is built of squared, punched ashlar with a slate roof. The church has five bays on the north-west and south-east walls, with tall windows having plain stone surrounds, semi-circular heads with keystones, impost band and sill band. The south-west wall is blank except for a doorway with architrave and moulded cornice, beneath which is an inscription and date, 1827.

The interior has a gallery with organ at the southern end, supported on slim iron columns. The one-bay chancel is divided from the nave by a screen with 4 giant attached marbled Corinthian columns with pedestals and an elaborately decorated frieze and cornice. The central wide arch to the chancel is flanked by two smaller arches with doors set within them, in a triumphal arch motif. The rear wall of the chancel has stencilled decoration, with 2 more Corinthian attached columns and 2 quarter-columns.
