About St Oswald

St Oswald is a Roman Catholic church in Bellingham. It is part of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle.

Introduction

Ignatius Bonomi designed St Oswald's Church in Bellingham, which was built in 1839.

Architecture and furnishings

The church is built of dressed stone with a Welsh slate roof, and its nave and chancel form a single space with an east bellcote. On the south side, two sets of paired lancets sit under dripstones, and a gabled porch is topped with a foliated cross finial. The east end features three stepped lancets under a continuous dripstone, two trefoil windows above side lights, and a fanciful bellcote on moulded corbels. The gable includes a roundel with a pierced trefoil, crocketed pinnacles, and a foliated cross finial.

A monument by John Green is located in the south porch. The interior of the church is plain. The north wall is blank.
