About St. Patrick
St. Patrick is a Roman Catholic church in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Leeds.
Introduction
In May 2007, a new parish was established to serve the northern urban area of Huddersfield.
History
The church was built in 1832. A local landowner gave the land on which to build the church.
In September 2007, the parish was named as the Parish of the Holy Redeemer. The parish was formed over the summer of 2007, involving the closure of several churches including Saint Brigid, St Martin de Porres, Saint Bernadette, and Saint James. Couples are expected to undertake at least six months of supervised preparation with the Parish Priest and a marriage-course coordinator.
Architecture and furnishings
The church has a west front with two octagonal turrets with conical caps and foliate finials. The interior has a shallow ribbed apse with a triple lancet and quadripartite rib vaults on foliate corbels. The church has a gallery at the west end on clustered columns. Diagonal buttresses with crocketed pinnacles stand at the corners of the church.
Each aisle has five ranges of untraceried chamfered lancets, separated by shallow buttresses. The west front includes two untraceried chamfered lancets in the aisles and a three-light west window with Perpendicular tracery. A one-storey Perpendicular exonarthex was added in the twentieth century. The Diocesan Music department facilitates a Youth Choir that sings at Sunday Masses, in other churches across the country, and on BBC radio.
Sacraments and pastoral care
Young people in Year 6 or above are invited, usually once a year, to petition the Parish Priest for the Sacrament of Confirmation, and must explain why they wish to receive it. Adults who have never received Baptism are invited to speak with the Parish Priest and undertake a supervised period of formation, after which they are baptised and receive Confirmation and Holy Communion.
