About St Paul - Birkenhead

St Paul - Birkenhead is a Roman Catholic church in Birkenhead, Merseyside. It is part of the Diocese of Shrewsbury.

Introduction

St Paul in Birkenhead serves the Beechwood area, a large overspill housing district on the town's eastern edge, and was established as a parish in 1978.

History

The church was opened on 25th January 1981, the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul. Undated plans in the diocesan archive show a scheme for a combined school, community hall, church and presbytery within a square single-storey building, designed by Weightman & Bullen. The church as built differs from that scheme but can be attributed stylistically to the same architects. A community room was added in 1982 in the space between the church, presbytery and school hall.
