About Holy Name of Jesus - Oxton

Holy Name of Jesus - Oxton is a Roman Catholic church in Oxton, Merseyside. It is part of the Diocese of Shrewsbury.

Introduction

Holy Name of Jesus in Oxton, within the Diocese of Shrewsbury, was built in 1898-9 to designs by Edmund Kirby, with later additions in 1909.

History

In 1901 the carved timber high altar, reredos and wall panelling were installed in the sanctuary, and in 1903 three east windows by Hardman were added, all to Kirby's designs. Between 1908 and 1934 the church served as the episcopal church to the Bishop of Shrewsbury and was significantly embellished and enriched during this period. The pulpit was installed in 1923, and the Lady Chapel tabernacle and credence table in 1924.

Architecture and furnishings

The Lady Chapel contains two stained glass windows by Margaret Agnes Rope, including the 1929 window depicting Nine Martyrs of the Shrewsbury Diocese. The carved oak screens to the side arches were designed by Edmund Bertram Kirby and carved by the Norbury family of Huyton. The foundation stone was laid in 1898, and the church was consecrated in 1899 at a cost of £2,000. The church is Gothic with Perpendicular and domestic-style detailing, built of orange brick with moulded brick detailing and red tile roofs.

Music and liturgy

The sanctuary's stained glass windows, made by Hardman in 1903 to designs by Edmund Kirby, depict the Presentation at the Temple flanked by the Nativity and the Agony in the Garden. A third stained glass window on the liturgical south side of the nave, by Margaret Agnes Rope (1929), shows St Teresa of Lisieux and St Winefride. Edmund Kirby designed the Gothic timber reredos, wall panelling, and high altar in 1901, the altar now being set in a forward position. A polygonal timber pulpit (1923) stands to the right of the chancel screen. In 1985 Bing Vis reordered the sanctuary, re-siting and reducing the height of the high altar, removing communion rails, and extending the sanctuary steps.

Parish life

The parish takes monthly donations to support CAFOD, an international aid agency working to alleviate poverty and suffering in developing countries. The social committee arranges social events throughout the year, such as quizzes, singalongs, parish dinner dances and a summer BBQ.
