About St Peter, Lytham
St Peter, Lytham is a Roman Catholic church in Lytham, Lancashire. It is part of the Diocese of Lancaster.
Introduction
St Peter, Lytham, in the Diocese of Lancaster, traces its Catholic heritage to 1190, when a small Benedictine cell was founded in the grounds of the present Lytham Hall.
History
The worshipping community around the Benedictine cell was pastored in Penal times and beyond by Jesuits on the English Mission and by priests of the Northern Vicariate. In 1829 the Catholic Emancipation Act allowed Father Walmsley to build the present Church. The ensuing years have seen 8 parish priests, a large number of curates and assistant priests, 3 permanent deacons and two congregations of religious sisters working to support the Catholics of Lytham.
Adults seeking Baptism normally join the RCIA programme, which runs once a year from autumn to Easter. Those baptised in another denomination who seek to become Catholic normally join the RCIA process and are Confirmed when received into the Church.
