About St Pius X, Alderley Edge
St Pius X is a Roman Catholic church in Alderley Edge, Cheshire. It is part of the Diocese of Shrewsbury.
Introduction
A plaque to the left of the altar records that the Prefect of the Salopian Chapter consecrated the primary stone in honour of Pope Pius X on 25 May 1968.
History
In 1942 the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Apparition bought a house in Ryleys Lane as a convent to train postulants and novices, and the first known Mass in the Alderley Edge area since the Reformation was held there. The Salvatorian Fathers, based in Macclesfield, said Mass at the convent. A few local Catholics began attending the convent Mass. Alderley Edge has had a parish priest since 1946.
Stamford House was bought in 1959 as the presbytery, and in 1961 the parish priest moved there from the converted gardener's store at the Ryleys Lane convent. A former schoolhouse in Stamford Road was bought and converted into a Catholic church amid much local opposition. Volunteer parishioners run parish activities, organise church services and maintain the parish. Pastoral care is always available for those in need.
