About St. Serf

St. Serf is a Roman Catholic church in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Motherwell.

Introduction

The Covenant Scheme was started in 1964. In 1976, Saint Serf's V.I.P. committee joined with Saint Columba's to organise joint Christmas dinners for senior citizens, continuing until 1980. Father Lillis remained in Saint Serf's for eleven years and died on 12th February 1973.

Parish life

Groups of men from the parish went to Buchlyvie to help the Kiltegan Fathers clear grounds and decorate buildings. A 'Bannockburn Day' challenge football match was organized between teams from Saint Serf's parish and Saint Dominic's parish, Craigend. The men of the parish attended a retreat at Craighead, organized by Eddie Harkins with help from Ted Wylie.

Regular events

The statue of Our Lady is taken round the parish and the rosary is said in parishioners' homes, a practice that continues to the present day. The annual Saint Patrick's night Dance was held in the Sir John Wilson Town Hall and the Christmas Dance in the Tudor Hotel. The 'Fair Monday' outing to Ayr, with five or six coaches, continued until 1968.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Catechists assisted with the preparation of parents prior to their children receiving the sacraments. Cana Conferences prepared engaged couples for the sacrament of Marriage. Assistant priests' work involved the sick, the young and the old, family visits and attending the schools. The annual pilgrimage to Lourdes, started in 1963, sent many people, especially the sick and disabled, to Lourdes.
