About St. Teresa of the Child Jesus, Filton
St. Teresa of the Child Jesus, Filton is a Roman Catholic church in Filton, Gloucestershire. It is part of the Diocese of Clifton.
Introduction
Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus in Filton, within the Diocese of Clifton, is one of the first parishes in the world to claim the name of the 'Little Flower', after Saint Teresa of Lisieux, canonised in 1925.
History
After the Second World War, two properties were bought next to the Presbytery and the site was developed for a new Roman Basilica style Church. For several years St Vincent's was served from St Teresa's, Filton. The interior has seen changes over the years but is close to its original design.
Parish life
In 2011, a new Diocesan structure led the parish to work closely with the Parish of Saint Vincent de Paul in Southmead under pastoral supervision. In more recent years the parishes of St Teresa's and St Vincent's joined once again and are served by a single priest.
A parish group formed in 2024 meets monthly on Zoom to explore responses to environmental and climate crises. The parish has a strong CAFOD group that raises awareness and supports CAFOD's worldwide work. A small group meets regularly with the parish priest to monitor parish finances and consider the fabrics of parish buildings. Both boys and girls serve on the altar, assisting the priest or deacon in worship.
The parish has a shop selling religious items, open on request. Saint Teresa's welcomes young people to participate in all areas of parish life, including as Readers, ministers of Holy Communion, Welcomers, Collectors, and the Choir. Within the grounds there is a Memorial Garden to past parishioners and an Orchard purchased from a neighbour in 1969. At the rear of the church there is a Community Centre used for functions. During Advent and Lent, the parish holds a Penitential Mass at either St Teresa's or St Vincent's with several priests present to hear confessions.
Sacraments and pastoral care
Children are prepared for Communion through the First Holy Communion and Reconciliation course, and adults through the RCIA course. Confessions can also be heard by appointment by contacting the parish priest. Confirmation is offered to teenagers usually from age 13 onwards. Adults who are baptised Catholics and wish to receive Confirmation should contact the parish priest directly.
Couples must attend a one-day Marriage course run by Marriage Care. Those wishing to receive the Sacrament of the Sick can contact the parish priest.
Notable people and events
Father John Hayes served as parish priest from 1925 to 1927. Father Joseph Renehan served as parish priest from 1927 to 1941. Father James Rea served as parish priest from 1941 to 1945.
