St. Thomas [Syro-Malabar]

Introduction

During the Dukhrana in July 2022, STSMCC was officially erected as a parish. October 2009 saw Family Units established.

History

The community in Bristol came together in the early 2000s under the banner of Malayalee Christians. A Director of the Syro-Malabar Mission under Clifton Diocese was appointed in October 2004. October 2006 brought a relocation of the community in Bristol to Saint Joseph's Church in Fishponds. Completion of charity registration came in October 2014.

Elevation of the mission to Mission status occurred in July 2018. The first official Vicar was appointed in November 2023. Development of the Marian Garden occurred in 2025.

Music and liturgy

During the eastern liturgy, the hymns that are sung are traditional ones in Malayalam. Kerala’s choral tradition reaches Bristol through the choir. Parish renewal and prayer meetings are organised by the evangelisation ministry.

Parish life

The parish has 19 family units in Bristol and 5 in Bath. SMYM Bristol takes part in many of the community’s charitable works.

Children are trained and encouraged to take part in altar service. A weekly newsletter published by the parish carries mass intentions and parish news.
