About St. Teresa's Church, Ashford

St. Teresa's Church, Ashford is a Roman Catholic church in Ashford, Kent. It is part of the Archdiocese of Southwark.

Introduction

A chapel opened on the present site in 1862, and it was later replaced by a church designed by Edward Pugin.

History

The parish began at Calehill, a manor house near Little Chart, where the first Mass after the Reformation was said in the family home of John Darrell. Father James Darrell, a Jesuit and son of John, served as priest for the Ashford district from 1769 to 1775. In 1884 Father O'Toole became parish priest. Dr O'Toole began collecting funds for the building of a church in Ashford.

In 1987 St Simon's, South Ashford became a separate parish. Two old oak carved benches beside the altar originally came from the private chapel at Calehill.
